Why Should we get to know Ourselves?

knowing ourselves is an essential part of growing and evolving in life, but it is an even necessary part of building our self-esteem. Therefore, we should try to learn who we are so well that no one can tell us something about ourselves that we do not already know. Sounds achievable? Read on!

There are many reasons why we should know ourselves, but there are 4 main reasons that we are focusing on this post.

Building a strong relationship with oneself is the cornerstone of building a healthy self-esteem. We realize that what help us grow must come from within before it manifests on the outside. For instance, to become confident, we must first work in our mindset to understand that we are deserving, that we are capable or that we can learn what is required to be confident in the area we want to focus on. By knowing ourselves, we come to accept ourselves as we are, while choosing to work toward being better for us. We get to know what makes us happy, grounded, safe and be our best, and what do not. As such, we know how to respond to our own needs, wants and keep ourselves grounded. Through knowing ourselves, we learn to identify those inner demons like trauma, fears, emotional imbalance, lacks, anxieties, worries and anything that is internally blocking us from seeing ourselves as who we can truly be.

We also become better equipped to pursuit our goals, interests and to better navigate life.

The truth is we can’t defeat the enemy without knowing him, and when we are trying to overcome a low self-esteem, our enemy is ourselves. Therefore, we must try to get to know ourselves as much as possible as we move through life.

Another reason why it is important to know ourselves is that it allows us to better navigate our life with a sense of directionBecause by knowing our values and beliefs, and forging our own identity, we get to focus on things that are important to us and where we are heading in our life. This understanding can only improve our self-esteem, because when we act against our values and beliefs, we create imbalance within ourselves, leading to unhappiness and negatively impacting our self-esteem. No one want to go aimlessly through life because it can waste time, energy and can lead to places you may not want to be. But when we stop and start reflecting on where we want to be, we not only feel confident in navigating our life, but we also start to take control of our life.

Additional reason why we should know ourselves is to empower us by taking the lead in defining who we are rather than letting others define us. The truth is if we do not get to know ourselves, others will make sure to show us who we are. Therefore, when we know our strengths, skills, qualities, weaknesses, limitations, and work with them to build who we are, rather than ignore, avoid or work against them, we not only limit and hinder ourselves, but we also give things outside ourselves the opportunities to use it in any way they see fit for them.

However, when we know who we are, things outside ourselves may have little impact on us because we have already identified who we are or are not, and nothing can change that unless we allow it.

Furthermore, by getting to know ourselves, we learn to be in control of our emotions and learn to manage themto better serve us in life. As a result, we remain in control of who we are while empowering ourselves.

Finally, knowing ourselves also help us break free from other judgement and criticism as we get to know who we are. Because our identity has been tied to a particular way of being, thing or place for so long, it can be difficult to start seeing ourselves differently, unless we start owning who we are and other may eventually embrace us. The reality is if this process can be difficult for us, it can certainly be challenging for others as well. But the only way forward to finding ourselves is through acceptance of who we truly are or choose to be.

To own who we are also require lot of strength and courage, but how to find it is by realizing that the joy of finding ourselves will outweigh any fears we may have, and from the pains we have been carrying from lack of self-awareness and from low self-esteem.

As we start to build awareness about who we are or who we want to become, we realize that there are many valid reasons why we should get to know ourselves, but one reason is certain: it is more challenging to navigate our life when we do not know who we are.

However, this is a process that we all can embark on starting by building awareness because the truth is soon or later, life have it ways of forcing us to stop and assess who we are, what we want, and where we are going or want to go and these require knowing self.

Finally, the reality is that knowing ourselves come down to one thing “No one knows us because we do not know ourselves” and as such, we can easily take on the judgment of others, but when we get to know who we are, we free ourselves from it, and our self-esteem can benefit.
